JONATHAN CAREY
Jonathan Carey (b. 1993) is a Finnish American visual artist and photographer based in Tampere, Finland. Typically, he uses digital photographic techniques as a basis for his medium, often including extensive photo manipulations. Carey has always been drawn to introspective, psychological, and theophilosophical themes, usually exploring concepts through images and finding inspiration from relevant literature and his own thought processes. His work is often monochromatic, cryptic, and moody.
Born in Kuopio, Carey has lived in several parts of Finland and the United Kingdom before moving to Tampere in 2015. Previously a musician, it was at this time he shifted his focus to visual arts and photography.
MECHANICS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
The brain has an uncertainty reduction mechanism. It is always figuring out, how well-situated you are in the world – how much do you not know, compared to how much you have mastered.
Mechanics of Consciousness is a collection of visualisations in the form of photographic images, sculpture and animation. It has emerged as a by-product of contemplation about the unexplainable complexity, function and significance of human consciousness. The work plays with the idea of inhabiting a higher dimension where the workings and structure of consciousness are accessible as 2- and 3 dimensional objects.
“On a device, when you try to load a program that is in a foreign format, all you’ll probably get is unreadable code and static gibberish. Perhaps some things are not meant to be seen, and even if you could see them, it would not be comprehensible.”
